🎓 School Case Study: Translating Ambiguity into Real-World Strategy
Blen Abebe – Blackmore Partners Intern
Washington University in St. Louis | Mathematics + Computer Science + Finance
1. Executive Summary
This summer, I joined Blackmore Partners as a Private Equity Business Development Intern. Unlike my structured coursework at WashU in Mathematics + Computer Science, and Finance, this internship immersed me in ambiguity, ownership, and direct exposure to C-level thinking. I worked alongside executives who were actively preparing to lead private equity-backed acquisitions. My role extended far beyond completing tasks—I had to navigate ambiguity, interpret complex transcripts, and synthesize information into structured outputs that executives could act on. I learned how to think like a dealmaker: not just identifying opportunities but shaping how they’re framed and pursued. I used systems like SignalMate—not just as a tool, but as a reflective framework that helped me unpack executive thinking, clarify goals, and guide internal decision-making. I also relied on structured methods like NAICS-based sourcing, Model 2 communication, and recursive documentation to move projects forward.
2. Context & Challenge
Blackmore’s model equips executives to lead private equity-backed acquisitions. I entered during a critical ramp-up: 20+ live transcripts were unstructured, ownership of tasks was unclear, and executives like Alain Messi and Wally were actively developing deal theses. My challenge was to generate clarity fast. I needed to support sourcing, tag signals in meeting notes, create internal documentation, and reflect strategically— all while staying ahead of deliverables for clients like Keith and Kevin.
3. What I Did
✅ Sourcing Real Companies
- Sourced and validated 100+ aerospace supply chain firms (Wally project) using NAICS + revenue filters
- Delivered two regional comp sets (West + Mid-America) and distilled top 40 into a master Excel for executive review
- Built and submitted a 13-category PitchBook sourcing file for Keith Mahosky targeting PE-backed energy and nuclear verticals
- Practiced targeted validation by filtering companies for alignment with SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic
✅ SignalMate + Transcript Intelligence
- Personally reviewed and analyzed 20+ transcripts from executive meetings
- Built first-pass uploads (e.g., 'Alain_Messi_FirstPass_Reflection.docx', 'All_Teams_707_FirstPass.docx') with executive signals
- Used SignalMate to tag hesitation, activation, and drop-off points in deal readiness
- Helped format and structure professional standards used across SharePoint
✅ Cross-System Impact
- Drafted internal onboarding guides and reflection templates now used in intern training (e.g., SignalMate_Training_CaseStudy_Blen.docx)
- Created a blog-style testimonial featured on Blackmore Connects’ website to help future interns map their learning curve
- Built calendar briefings for Gerald (e.g., July 9 Meeting Digest), reflecting time-sensitive executive support
4. Tools & Thinking Models Used
- SignalMate AI: Used for recursive learning, first-pass uploads, and reflection threading
- PitchBook: Ran targeted PE-backed company searches across sectors (Energy, Nuclear, Aerospace)
- Cyndx: Joined live executive demo (with Robert) and noted how execs map their funnel via platform features
- NAICS Codes: Layered NAICS targeting with regional filters and revenue bands ($50M–$250M)
- Model 2 Thinking (Chris Argyris): Practiced assumption testing and personal signal tagging during internal ambiguity
- SharePoint Protocols: Developed clean upload patterns and naming conventions across reflection docs
- Recursive Practice: Turned every conversation into layered learning and reusability
5. Results & Deliverables
- Submitted 6+ structured case studies and sourcing reports
- Parsed 1000+ company profiles across PitchBook verticals
- Supported 3 executive projects (Wally, Alain, Keith)
- Created re-usable onboarding and naming convention templates for team
- Applied all SignalMate training to produce tagged first-pass uploads and system documentation for all PEBD Interns
6. Reflection & Takeaways
Compared to the structure of my courses at WashU, this internship was a crash course in strategic ambiguity. I learned to:
- Ask better questions before completing unclear requests
- Use AI to expand—not replace—my thinking
- Frame myself not as a student, but as a system builder
From organizing SharePoint docs to interpreting executive bottlenecks, I didn’t just learn—I helped shape how Blackmore trains its future analysts and operators. This was not a simulation. This is real.
